I was recently contacted by Larry Deemer, who is lucky enough to live in Breezy Point, a coastal neighborhood in Queens, the borough of New York City. Larry spends time on the beach, observing - obviously with great pleasure and in meticulous detail - what is going on, particularly after a high tide. He sent me some of his photographs, and I was captivated. As he says
Most people don’t stop to notice the beautiful patterns, or believe that they would be found on a beach in New York City. The variety of patterns are intriguing…from the ones that repeat simple patterns over a large area to the ones that are strangely abstract to the ones that look like a Japanese landscape painting or a dental x-ray. The best photos do not come from expensive cameras or digital ones. The simple Ricoh lens captures the warmest feeling of the sand… It’s nice to know that others stop to look at sand.I make my time on the beach a blend of art and science. There is always something new to see and wonder over.
