What to expect on the journey from an idea for a book to actually holding it in your hands? Three of us who have taken this interesting trip, Brian Switek at Laelaps (whose book, Written in Stone, will be published later this year), David Williams at Stories in Stone whose book of the same title came out last year_,_ and I, thought it would be not only fun for us to compare notes on the process and our experiences, but that such thoughts might be of interest and use to any readers who are contemplating embarkation on the journey. So, over the next week or so, we’ll be reflecting on some of what we found to be the key issues and questions, but what we really would like is that this develops into a broader conversation. So we very much look forward to questions/ideas/comments/corrections - none of us pretends to have the answers to all the aspects of the process, but at least it’s something that we’ve experienced and that experience is something we can share.
The first episode will be around how to make a technical (and possibly seemingly obscure) topic accessible, exciting, and of interest to a publisher (not to mention potential readers), together with a look at the different kinds of publishers, putting together a proposal, and related thoughts. We’ll each of us post our ruminations and Brian will collate the links on his blog. We all hope that this will be of interest and look forward to hearing from you!
